Copper Mountain is located about 45 minutes north of Leadville Colorado at the junction of Highway 91 and I-70. However, several hundred years ago, the region surrounding Copper Mountain Ski Resort was home to the Ute and Arapaho Indians who enjoyed the natural beauty and prospered from the abundant fish and game.
Around 1880, John Wheeler established a settlement at the foot of present day Copper Mountain. Miners, loggers, fur traders and prospectors soon called Wheeler Junction home.
In the early and mid 1970's, as the construction of I-70 worked its way west from Denver, the plans for a ski resort at Copper Mountain began to unfold. In 1971, Chuck Lewis founded the Copper Mountain Ski Resort.
Over the years the resort has expanded considerably and in 1997 Intrawest Corporation purchased the resort. It now contains 22 ski lifts and over 2400 skiable acres.
The historic mining town of Leadville is a great diversion from the resort community of Copper Mountain. Ski Cooper, located just outside of Leadville, is a fantastic ski alternative as well. Click here for a map with directions to Ski Cooper.
