CHICAGO RIDGE SNOWCAT TOURS-BACKCOUNTRY EDUCATION SERIES
2009/2010 Season

Chicago Ridge Snowcap Tours offers backcountry and avalanche safety courses in a mechanized guide setting. We specialize in the student experience, with a maximum of 12 participants per session. Our professional guides are instructors with AIARE and AAA. Each course included classroom instruction and field sessions. We have a course to fit any winter backcountry user's need! Introduction to Avalanches - One Session per Month!

A 1.5 day (12 hour) course that focuses on basic terrain, snowpack and weather analysis. The fundamentals of avalanche rescue equipment are introduced for "companion" or single burial rescue situations. This course is suited for any backcountry traveler: Skier, Riders, Snowshoers, or Snowmobilers.

Course Schedule:      Course 1 December 25/26; Course 2 January 22/23; Course 3 February 26/27;
                                       Course 4 March 12/13
Course Fee:                $150


Backcountry Safety - Two Sessions

A two day course that includes a dinner at our Yurt! This is an introductory level course for enthusiasts who wish to embark on extended backcountry tours such as a hut trip. The course is conducted in a "guided trip" format covering responsible backcountry use, safe route planning, winter shelters, in addition to basic avalanche safety and rescue. Our guides will serve you a backcountry gourmet dinner at our yurt.  Students need backcountry touring equipment for this course-rentals are available at the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center.

Course Schedule:      Course 1 January 2/3; Course 2 March 17/18

Avalanche Level One- One Session

This course is designed for the serious backcountry enthusiast and backcountry travel companions. Students will learn how to: apply the backcountry forecast bulletin in tour planning and travel; select safe travel routes; recognize instabilities in the snowpack and form basic pit profiles; apply simple decision tools in avalanche terrain; and conduct mock avalanche rescues for single burial scenarios-multiple burial scenarios will be introduced.
